What Happens in an Ayahuasca Ceremony?

With many today turning to natural treatments, it’s understandable to be curious about ayahuasca and its benefits. Maybe you aren’t sure what to expect — and that’s why you are here. Or, maybe you are curious about its medicinal properties and what the whole experience is like.

The ancient medicinal brew has origins in Peru and all over the Amazon. It’s a thick and brown tea, and it’s made with Caapi, a vine that only grows in the rainforest. The plant leaves have hallucinogenic properties. It’s used for various purposes and has been used throughout the centuries to solve problems, treat illnesses, achieve enlightenment, and so much more.

In this article, we’ll be telling you about ayahuasca and what it means to have an ayahuasca experience. From there, you can decide whether or not an ayahuasca ceremony is something you’d like to experience.

What Does an Ayahuasca Ceremony Consist Of?

Ayahuasca ceremonies involve drinking the plant and vine tea blend with an experienced and respected Shaman as your guide. The experience will take you through a long night connected deeply to higher intelligence and understanding your true self.

As stated above, ayahuasca is a brew made from a mixture of plant medicine that originated from the Amazon rainforest (where it is perfectly legal) and has been used for centuries by the indigenous tribes of the Amazon for spiritual healing and growth, as well as physical and mental well-being.

Ayahuasca ceremonies involve drinking ayahuasca tea, which is a blend of two plants – the ayahuasca plant and the Chacruna plant.

The ayahuasca plant contains MAOIs (Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors), which allow DMT (Dimethyltryptamine) contained in the Chacruna plant to be orally active. DMT is a potent psychedelic compound that occurs naturally in every human and animal body, but it is not active or does not work when taken orally.

Ayahuasca ceremonies involve ayahuasca tea being mixed with water and then consumed by the participants and then sitting in a comfortable ayahuasca ceremony setting in preparation for the experience. Ceremonies generally last all night, and the effects can last up to eight hours.

What Should You Expect During the Ayahuasca Ceremony?

Taking an ayahuasca journey is a unique experience where you connect with the infinite, the divine, the mystery, or whatever your term is for your personal higher power or being.

Many users have described the ayahuasca experience as a highly spiritual and mind-altering journey, which will provide insight into your life, past lives, future lives or even parallel universes. Ayahuasca is not something to be taken lightly, and ayahuasca ceremonies should always be done with a Shaman as your ayahuasca guide.

The icaros are sung by the Shaman as part of the ceremony. These songs enhance your mareación, or the hallucinogenic parts of ayahuasca. You will likely obtain a more significant appreciation of the power of music from listening to the icaros.

You should also prepare that what you see and hear from the divine/infinite may not be something you like. People have been known to have extremely wonderful experiences, and also terrible ones.

Ayahuasca is referred to as feminine, generally because people have stated the voice of great intelligence they hear is female. She speaks to you directly and instructs you on what you need to do to improve your life.

The experience is going to be beyond language and beyond what you can put into words. Many say it’s ten years of therapy downloaded in a night. You may also learn that all you have perceived with your five senses and assimilated by your mind is false or contrived.

If you choose to return and experience a second ceremony, or even more than that, you should know it will be different each time. Each experience is unique, and a part of a collection of many experiences people have had over the centuries.

How Does My Diet Affect the Ayahuasca Ceremony?

There is a recommended diet that you should stick to before the ceremony. It will allow the plants to help your body get rid of the chemicals such as salt, caffeine, sugar, or alcohol. The plant will purge the impurities and toxins you have consumed throughout your life. This is called purging.

As a result, you will likely get sick, and since this is expected, purge buckets will be available for you to do so. Don’t be afraid of this part of the ceremony because there will be nothing left to purge once your body is clean.

It is possible and is believed that ayahuasca lets your subjective self temporarily shed and merge with the divine “other.” After the night is over, you might find yourself with a new belief in what was once simply mundane.

What Other Physical Sensations Should I Expect?

  • Your heart rate increases, and you may feel a tingling sensation throughout your body.
  • The taste is strange, and you may feel a burning sensation as it goes down, and it will spread all over your body.
  • The burning and sweating sensation usually subsides, but nausea may continue.
  • Increased brain activity may cause you to hear something that sounds like an electric hum.
  • Your eyesight becomes more sensitive, and you may see various colours and flashes of light.
  • Disassociation from your body may occur, and you may not feel fully conscious of what you’re doing.
  • Your arms and legs may tremble and shake.
  • You might feel heavy, like the force of gravity has dramatically increased.
  • You will likely experience a slew of positive feelings, like bliss or euphoria.
  • You may experience bouts of nausea in waves, and they may not completely disappear until the experience is over.

How Do I Choose an Ayahuasca Ceremony?

The first thing you should do is choose a Shaman that is respected and legitimate. You must trust them with your emotional and psychological well-being. Your mind is likely to deconstruct first and then reconstruct itself. Once your mind is broken open, you might experience schizophrenia-like symptoms. Since this can be terrifying, you’ll want to make sure you choose the right Shaman for your ceremony.
