At some point, many of us begin to sense that there’s a whole lot more to life than what we’ve been taught. Dismiss that feeling, and for the most part, life stays the same…
Comfortable and secure, but lacking a deeper substance.
However, if you explore that feeling and see where it takes you, you’ll find yourself on a raw but liberating journey of self-discovery to find out who you really are beneath the surface.
For some people, this inward journey is all about consistently chipping away at their inner work via practices like meditation and self-reflection. For others, it’s about stepping outside their comfort zone and making some big changes in life.
The desire to meet my true self has involved travelling the world for many years, exploring various traditions, working extensively with ancestral medicines, and meeting the right teachers who could guide me deeper into this bizarre maze we call consciousness.
What I’ve learned along this process has drastically improved my quality of life, and this is what I want to discuss with you in this article.

What does self-discovery mean?
The self-discovery journey is about peeling back the layers of your identity and finding out who you truly are beneath your programming and conditioning.
While it’s not about chasing achievements or reaching any particular destination, the self-discovery journey is a life-long pursuit of discovering a more authentic way of living via continuous:
- Self-improvement. Working on yourself, developing new skills and characteristics.
- Self-inquiry. Questioning yourself, reflecting on your experiences, and engaging in introspection.
- Self-exploration. Exploring new hobbies, ways of life, and connecting with new people.
For me, this path started from a place of struggle.
As a young adult, I battled with insecurity, depression, and eventually self-destructive habits. I knew there had to be more to life than this, but I didn’t know where to look until I stumbled into the world of personal development.
Suddenly, I realised I could learn how to change my outlook and mindsets. I could learn how to build myself up, brick by brick, by doing inner work and developing traits like confidence, self-esteem, competence, and so forth.
To you, this might seem trivial, but to me at the time, this was an epiphany… A light at the end of the tunnel that gave me hope.
“I can learn how to be happy, I’m not stuck like this”.
Self-discovery leads to soul-searching
Over time, my curiosity to improve my life led me to a soul-search. Plant medicines became tools for self-reflection, where one profound experience changed everything.
My depression instantly vanished, and all these limiting beliefs and baggage, gone.
For weeks afterwards, there was an indescribable feeling of seeing the world through the eyes of a baby once again. But I had so many questions!
“What on Earth did I experience, and where did I go?”
“How did this experience seemingly heal me overnight?”
“What else are these plants capable of, and are there people who know more about them?”
I simply couldn’t just sit around waiting for answers to come to me. So, I decided to pack everything I had into a backpack and begin travelling the world indefinitely in search of understanding.
That journey has taken me across cultures, traditions, and spiritual practices, particularly within the shamanic healing space in South America, where I have spent most of my time over the past few years.
But I’ve learned that every conversation, teacher, modality, religion, tradition, and faith I’ve encountered is like a piece of the puzzle, which has each played a role in helping me understand the bigger picture about life and oneself.

Why do people embark on this journey?
At its heart, the self-discovery journey is about wanting more: more meaning, more authenticity, more substance, and more connection.
These are intrinsic values that you can’t attain, for they need to be discovered.
People choose this path because they’re no longer satisfied with surface-level living and want to uncover who they are beneath all the roles, expectations, and conditioning.
A self-discovery journey often includes:
- Continuous self-improvement and healing.
- A desire for continuous transformation and change.
- Reflecting on your past and how it has shaped you.
- Identifying your core values and passions.
- Finding recurring patterns in your life and blockages to resolve.
- Exploring new experiences and perspectives.
- Understanding how to express yourself more authentically.
- Letting go of limiting beliefs and masks of identity.
- Learning to trust your intuition.
- Finding your hidden strengths and gifts.

Nobody wakes up one day saying, “You know what? Today’s the day I’m going to find myself!”
That’s just not how it works…
Life has a way of nudging (or sometimes shoving) us toward self-discovery. It’s generally a gradual awakening, or perhaps a trigger that launches you into a new phase of your life that is more concerned with substance rather than image.
In some ways, the slow-winding process of shedding untruth is a form of ego-death, which can be disorienting as you detach from the image and rediscover yourself all over. But it’s necessary if you want to become the best version of yourself, and the most authentic person you can be.
Eventually, the desire for a more fulfilling life outweighs the comfort of what you already have. That’s usually the spark that sets this journey in motion.

Journaling is a powerful tool for self-discovery. Putting your thoughts onto paper helps you recognise limiting beliefs, outdated patterns, and behaviours that may be shaping your life under the surface.
Once those thoughts are visible, it becomes easier to understand them and choose new ways forward.
Don’t worry about writing down these self-discovery journal prompts perfectly. Just be honest with yourself, and see what insights pop up when writing down the answers.

- Who am I, honestly, and what am I looking for in life?

It’s essential to continually challenge yourself, question your decisions, and dig to the root of the matter.
You want to ask yourself these questions and contemplate an honest answer. Don’t just one-off them, but give them some serious thought, ask yourself them at different periods of your life, and use those answers to guide your future decisions.
Some self-discovery questions you should consider exploring are:
- Who am I when no one is watching?
- What do I want my life to stand for?
- What are my highest values, and how do they guide my life?
- How do I define success on my own terms?
- What am I most afraid of, and what might that fear be teaching me?
Explore new experiences
It’s hard to discover new layers of yourself if you’re always doing the same things. Growth needs to be fed, and the best way to do that is by stepping into new experiences that stretch your comfort zone.
Based on my journey, here are a few avenues for self-discovery that have absolutely changed my life for the better:
- Travel by yourself. Since 2016, I’ve lived out of a backpack, and travelling solo has been one of my greatest teachers. It’s not always easy, but regularly throwing myself into new environments challenges me in ways that a stable routine never can, and illuminates the real me. Even if you just take a short trip, solo travel can do wonders.
- Immerse yourself in different traditions. Exploring philosophies, religions, and cultural practices outside of your own gives you a much wider lens on life. This perspective helps you step outside the box and decide for yourself what’s true. Take what resonates, let go of what doesn’t.
- Seek out teachers, mentors, and guides. Don’t underestimate the role that the right teachers can play in your transformation. Keep your eyes open and be willing to learn, and you’ll find yourself organically running into great mentors (of all kinds) who can teach you a lot.
- Explore ancestral medicines. Plant medicines have played a pivotal role in my transformation. When approached with respect and intention, they can open powerful doorways into self-understanding.
